The hodgkinsines are indole alkaloids from Hodgkinsonia frutescens (family Rubiaceae) containing three linked tryptamine units. Hodkinsine was first reported by Ritchie et al (University of Sydney) in 1961. Hodgkinsine shows potent dose-dependent analgesic activity against capsaicin-induced pain, with low affinity for mu opioid receptors. Hodgkinsine has a broad bioprofile with potent antimicrobial activity, antifungal and cytotoxic activity. Hodgkinsine has antiviral activity against DNA viruses and is a platelet aggregation inhibitor.
